Taekwondo History

Olympic Taekwondo

In 1980 the status of Taekwondo was elevated…

In 1980, WTF Taekwondo was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a demonstration sport in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

Following its presence as a demonstration event in 1988 and 1992, WTF Taekwondo made its debut as an official Medal Event for the 1st time at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Since that time, WTF Taekwondo has remained a medal event at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and will be again at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Only WTF Members are eligible to participate at official World Taekwondo Championships or the Olympic Games.

Do Not Be Confused! For the sport of Taekwondo, only World Championships sanctioned by the World Taekwondo Federation are official games. In Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee recognizes only WTF Taekwondo as official.
